Violet Urchin

I saw a fresh urchin at a vendor from Monterey Bay, California at a farmers market in the San Francisco Bay Area. The merchant had cut open one of the urchins exposing the meat “uni” inside. It was a brilliant ,soft, lump, golden yellow in contrast to the sharp violet purple spines on the exterior., It was stopped in my tracks. I purchased a few and brought them back to the studio and experimented with techniques to capture the multitude of spines still rotating fresh from the sea.
